Kevin Doyle stars for Colorado Rapids as Robbie Keane's LA Galaxy are knocked out of MLS Cup

Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle scored in Sunday evening's penalty shootout, as Colorado Rapids knocked LA Galaxy of of the end-of-season MLS Cup.

The Wexford native came out on top in the battle of the Irish strikers, as the Denver-based side defeated Robbie Keane's LA Galaxy, the five-time MLS Cup champions.

Doyle started Sunday's Western Conference semi-final second leg, as the Rapids began the game with a 1-0 first-leg deficit, but levelled the tie after half-an-hour through Shkelzen Gashi. The remaining hour of normal time, plus extra-time could not separate the sides in Denver.

While Keane failed to take a penalty in the shootout, Doyle scored the Rapids' first in their 3-1 win, as goalkeeper Tim Howard saved two of LA's four attempts.

After the game, Doyle took to Twitter, to mock LA Galaxy manager Bruce Arena's comments about the altitude. Denver is known in America as the "mile-high city" and is one of the highest cities in the country.

Doyle and the Rapids now advance to the Western Conference Final where they meet Seattle Sounders. For LA Galaxy, the team have now gone another season without an MLS Cup.

The loss in Colorado, could also be the last match of Steven Gerrard's career. The former Liverpool captain would not confirm after the loss if he would stay with the Galaxy for another season.
