Jose Mourinho to axe eight players at Manchester United to pave the way for Pogba move - Report

Jose Mourinho is preparing to trim eight players from his Manchester United team ahead of the new Premier League season, according to The Sun.

Mourinho has wasted little time in bolstering the squad before their opener against Bournemouth on August 14, with the Portuguese already having completed deals for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitarayan.

It is reported that he is looking "to work with 22 core players", meaning there will be a number of high profile casualties at the club.

Among those expected to leave Manchester before the transfer deadline are Juan Mata, who worked with Mourinho previously at Chelsea before his move to United and Memphis Depay who has had a rather underwhelming maiden season at Old Trafford.

Bastian Schweinsteiger is another facing the door after enduring a season plagued by injury since moving from Bayern Munich last summer.

A number of players will also be shipped to help finance a big-money move for Juventus' Paul Pogba, with rumours of a £100m bid set to go in to capture the Frenchman. The 23-year-old has been one of France's stand-out players and is likely to feature in tonight's European Championship final against Portugal.

Pogba would be in line to earn upwards of £11m  per year at United, having left the club on a free in 2012.
