Jose Mourinho tastes defeat as Borussia Dortmund outclass Manchester United

Jose Mourinho will more than likely not be pleased after his side started their International Champions Cup game with a loss.

While the Portuguese had stated before the game that the result was not the most important thing, the nature of a number of the goals will have him scratching his head, as will the emphatic nature of the scoreline, as Thomas Tuchel's Borussia Dortmund side ran out 4-1 winners.

The first goal came courtesy of a free kick from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and with young keeper Sam Johnstone unable to hold on to the stinging shot, the Manchester United defence gifted the German side a number of further opportunities before the ball found the back of the net.

added the second before Dembele slammed a third home, once again being gifted too much space by a retreating Manchester United back line.

As Mourinho's team began to tire and the fitrness of Tuchl's regimen told, they were given the runabout and passed off the park, which eventually resulted in a fourth goal, as Dortmund strolled through, with Castro finishing the move off.

The one piece of good news for the team will be that former Dortmund man Henrikh Mkhitaryan opened his account with Manchester United, scoring the lone goal for his new team.

Speaking afterwards, Mourinho highlighted that fitness played a huge role in the loss:

"In pre-season, the team that wins is always the team that is in an advanced stage of their preparations. It's never the best team [...] and it was too obvious; a team with four matches in their legs, a team working for about a month against another one working for a maximum of 15 days.

Emphasising the "huge difference in the preparation," he added that he was still not pleased about the loss, but "I'm happy with the 90 minutes that we have in our legs. It's very important to compete and to compete in very difficult circumstances with the weather and with the opponent, I think was good for us."

"At the moment, I'm not even creating a team," added Mourinho. "So many players are not here. We're creating individuals' form and trying to bring these players to a good condition. For the new signings and all of the players, they had a chance to play 45, 70 or 90 minutes. It's very, very important and I can imagine it will take a long time to recover from this effort in the game."
