Chelsea have continued their good start under new manager Thomas Tuchel with a 1-0 win away to out of form Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A first-half Jorginho penalty saw them leapfrog their opponents and Everton into sixth place in the table, and inflict a third defeat in a row for Spurs, their worst league run since 2012.
With Harry Kane out injured once again, Spurs looked toothless in attack; Carlos Vinicius starting up front with support from Son and Bergwijn, while Chelsea drafted Reece James back into their side, with Timo Werner leading the line and Tammy Abraham on the bench,
Chelsea dominated the opening half, and deservedly got the breakthrough midway through the first 45.
Tim Werner beat Eric Dier to the ball inside the penalty area, and the England international clipped the heels of the German striker, who buried his penalty past Hugo Lloris.
The Blues continued to dominate and almost doubled their lead on 67 minutes, Mason Mount's dangerous cross was almost finished by Christian Pulisic, but Lloris was on hand to punch away. Lloris again kept Spurs alive in the game with a quarter of an hour to play, diving low to his left to keep Mason Mount's shot out of the bottom corner.
As time wore on Spurs built the pressure, and came agonisingly close to equalising when Carlos Vinicius rose highest at the back post, but his close-range header drifted wide, while Eric Dier also saw a free kick drift wide of the far post.
The victory brings Chelsea back within four points of Liverpool in the race for Champions League football, while the prospect of a top-four finish for Spurs is now looking increasingly challenging. They drop back to 8th in the table, although Jose Mourinho's side do hold a game in hand on their rivals.
