Ex-England international slates 'selfish' Henderson for Euros inclusion

Gabriel Agbonlahor has openly criticised Liverpool's Jordan Henderson for not ruling himself out of England contention ahead of this summer's European Championships.

An unused substitute as England overcame Austria 1-0 on Wednesday night, the Liverpool midfielder has been forced out of action through injury for most of 2021.

"What is really winding me up is the Henderson thing," stated an irate Agbonlahor on talkSPORT, "I think he is being selfish."

The 30-year-old Henderson has made 58 appearances for England and remains an important part of Gareth Southgate's plans.

Nevertheless, given the uncertainty surrounding his fitness Agbonlahor believes he should not be present in the final squad.

"He should just be honest with the manager now," implored the former Aston Villa man. "If you look at it, the squad has been announced and he told Southgate this morning that he [was not fit to play against Austria].

"They said the scans have come back and they're fine, and he knows himself that there is a niggle he is feeling.

"The tournament starts in 10 days, you are playing against Croatia, playing against a good, good team. You need to be at it, you need a training session before the game, you need some games in you.

"He can't go. If I am an English midfielder that hasn't been picked in this squad, I'm fuming. I am thinking, 'hang on a second, this player is an amazing player, great career so far, but he is injured. Send him home.

"It's not as if it's Lionel Messi, like send him home. We have got other midfielders that can do just as good a job as him."

Situated in Group D alongside Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic, England will be playing their group games in Wembley for what amounts to a home tournament for Southgate's team.
