England captain Wayne Rooney has found an unlikely ally in Chelsea captain John Terry.
Rooney has been dropped for England's World Cup qualifier on Tuesday evening against Slovenia in Ljubljana. The Manchester United player was widely booed by England's fans during their game at home to Malta at the weekend.
Despite being dropped by Gareth Southgate for the game for "tactical" reasons, former captain John Terry expects Rooney to return to the team, sooner rather than later.
In a difference from the norm of footballers, Terry has a very active presence on Instagram. He does not have a Twitter account.
The 35-year-old decided on Monday night to publicly back Rooney as captain, when others have called on the Liverpudlian to stay in the position.
"We should all show more respect to this great player and man. Let's all get behind Wayne and the England team", Terry proclaimed.
Rooney will start Tuesday's game on the bench. At least he knows one former England captain has his support.
