John Giles' view on new retrospective bans for simulation

John Giles has welcomed news that retrospective bans will be handed for acts of simulation including diving.

The FA confirmed that two match bans will come into force next season in to deal with situations "where there is clear and overwhelming evidence to suggest a match official has been deceived by an act of simulation".

A three-person panel consisting of one ex-match official, one ex-manager and one ex-player will be asked to advise the FA regarding specific incidents.

Speaking to Off The Ball as always on a Thursday, Leeds and Ireland legend John Giles welcomed the news.

"Great. That's really good news I think," he said.

"I think that's a really positive move."

On the reaction from managers - Sam Allarydce described some aspects of it as "utter rubbish" - Giles is "surprised" that the FA announcement hasn't been universally welcomed by Premier League managers.

"It's about time. Technology has to come into the game because what's happened in my opinion, years and years ago the only football that was on the telly was BBC Match of the Day," he said.

"So there were loads and loads of matches going on there where we didn't see the referees make mistakes if they made mistakes. Now, technology has come into the game and we can see loads and loads of matches now and we can see where the referee has made mistakes. So that's technology but the referees themselves haven't embraced the technology to help them. They've gone against it. So it's a double whammy for them. We're seeing things now that we never saw before on the television and they're in a world of their own."

However, in regards to Allardyce's criticism, the Crystal Palace manager suggested that incidents of simulation should be addressed during a match rather than retrospectively and Giles agrees.

"I'd agree with that," he said.
