John Giles is tipping Liverpool to win the Premier League title.
Speaking to Off The Ball as he previewed the new Premier League season, John also picked his Top Four.
"I would tip Liverpool at the moment to win it," he said.
"And in the Top Four, it has to be between Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Spurs. I can't see a Top Four coming outside of that."
But he is not completely ruling out the prospect of Arsenal being in the conversation for a Champions League spot.
In a season with a horde of elite managers, Jurgen Klopp has had a few months of a headstart at Liverpool ahead of a full season, and John feels the German "could be in the driving seat" while Pep Guardiola, Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho, for example, get accustomed to their new teams.
As for Guardiola, John believes creating a successful Manchester City "will be his biggest challenge by far" in comparison to when he took over at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
"He's got a big job on his hands but he seems to be looking at the future rather than the present," said John referencing the transfer business done by City this summer.
But he also expects Guardiola to adapt and sees John Stones developing rapidly under his tutelage.
And he feels Tottenham aren't "serious contenders" for the league this coming season, while John also looked at some of the many question marks around Arsenal after a relatively quiet in the transfer market.
As Manchester United strengthen with Paul Pogba in particular, John believes the club actually need a player more in the Paul Scholes mould but he believes that while the France midfielder may be talented, he isn't capable of playing that type of role because he would be more suited to a more free role.
"I don't think he's going to be the influence Mourinho is talking about at the moment," he said.
