John Giles is clearly unimpressed with the liabilities in Liverpool and West Ham's back-fours

John Giles feels both Liverpool and West Ham have a major liability each in their defence.

One is Alberto Moreno at Liverpool, who was culpable for a number of errors in their thrilling 4-3 win at Arsenal.

The other is Michail Antonio, who conceded a penalty as West Ham lost 2-1 at Chelsea on Monday night.

John is surprised that Jurgen Klopp has yet to recruit a starting left-back at Liverpool.

"[Klopp] has been there for six or seven months and Moreno is a disaster waiting to happen in every match," said John on Off The Ball.

"He's just not a good defender and he's proven to be as bad this season as he was last season. That's a definite weak spot which I'm surprised he hasn't filled already. I think there's talk about Milner playing in that position. Milner will do a good job wherever he's playing and would certainly do a better job than Moreno."

Antonio naturally plays further forward but has been placed at right-back by Slaven Bilic at West Ham.

"They have Antonio at right-back and as long as he's in the team, they'll win nothing," he said.

"I watched him last year and every time I watched him, he gave goals away. He just cannot play right back."

As for Arsenal after their setback against Liverpool, he believes that "there is no doubt that Arsenal will get better", especially when they get some of their absent players back.

"When all the players are fit, they do have a good squad of players - better than most teams. But they do not defend well, so even with a full squad, I don't feel they'll have the consistency to actually win it. But I think they could still, with the ability they have in the squad, finish in the Top Four," he said.

John was also impressed by Chelsea in their first game under Antonio Conte, describing them as "well-balanced" and having put in a "good, solid performance".

But John cannot see a benefit in Pep Guardiola deploying his full-backs so centrally at Manchester City and that it will not work against stronger sides than the Sunderland side they edged.
