John Giles believes it would be a "disaster" if Arsenal were to have Arsene Wenger working under a director of football.
Rumours have abounded that the under-pressure Wenger will sign a two year deal to stay in charge at the Emirates but that the club may bring in a director of football, with ex-Arsenal winger Marc Overmars - a Wenger signing in as a player 1997 - linked with the currently non-existent role, having served in the same role at Ajax Amsterdam.
Wenger is in charge of most aspects of the Arsenal first team under a more traditional structure and has never worked under a director of football at the club in his 21 years there.
"I think if they appoint a director of football, it would be a disaster for Arsenal and I would be amazed if Wenger would work under those conditions," said John on Off The Ball, although if the director of football is someone Wenger chooses rather than one chosen by the club's board, then he sees that as a positive.
"I don't think he would work under those conditions. He's never had a director of football before and I don't believe in directors of football to be honest because if you look over the last 20 odd years, 30 years, Ferguson for a long time was the most successful manager and Wenger was very, very successful for a long time and I think one's got to realise then that neither of them had a director of football."
John added, "I've no problem with directors of football if it's the manager's director of football and he works for the manager".
And if it is someone Wenger trusts and is in favour of, then John feels "it could be a good move for Arsenal".
"But if Arsenal insist that it's going to their director of football, then I don't think it will work," he concluded.
