John Giles says Roy Keane was wrong to publicly criticise Ireland's players in a press conference after the recent defeat to Belarus.
John joined Off The Ball tonight to discuss Ireland's build-up to the Euro 2016 opener against Sweden and reacted Keane's public criticism, with Aiden McGeady among those in the firing line.
"In Roy Keane's case, one of the first things I learned as manager is never, ever criticise your players in public. If you want to have a go at them, have a go at them in the dressing room. But don't criticise them in public because there should be a bond between assistant managers like Roy and the players," said John.
"I think he was wrong to publicly criticise his players and I think any manager is wrong to criticise his players because it does break a code of conduct between the managerial situation and the players' situation. But he has apologised for that since then and maybe he won't do it again."
On Monday night's game against Sweden, John would like to see James McClean start the game regardless of debates and fitness worries over other players.
"I would start McClean in the team. I think he's very, very good," he said, adding that he expects John O'Shea to start despite a lack of game-time in recent months at club level.
But John does believe that McClean can "overstep the line at times" with his enthusiasm.
"I'd be aware of his tackles at times but I'd still have him," said John, who also discussed the news that Keane and Martin O'Neill contractual situations have been sorted out.
Plus John made his prediction for Euro 2016.
