Ireland stay top as Wales and Serbia draw their World Cup qualifier

Ireland will stay top of their World Cup qualifying group after rivals Wales and Serbia drew 1-1 in Cardiff.

The Boys in Green had recorded a landmark 1-0 victory in Vienna against Austria to move onto 10 points from a possible 12 four games.

That had them on the summit of Group D ahead of the clash between two other sides vying for a place in the Top 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Wales' star name Gareth Bale put the Euro 2016 semi-finalists into a 1-0 lead on the half hour mark with his 26th international goal.

That leaves the Real Madrid winger two off Ian Rush's Wales' goalscoring record.

But it wasn't enough as Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic equalised for Serbia with four minutes to go of the 90.

He headed in Antonio Rukavina's cross to secure a crucial away point for the Balkans nation.

The result leaves Serbia two points behind Ireland on eight points.

Wales are third in the group on six points, four behind Ireland.

All three sides, however, have the same goal difference of +4.

They are the next opponents for Martin O'Neill's side with a fixture at the Aviva Stadium on March 24th 2017.
