Investigation begins into racist abuse allegations during Arsenal's win over Leeds

The Premier League has launched an investigation in allegations of racist abuse during Arsenal's win over Leeds this evening.

The Gunners won the game 4-1 - a result which cements their place in the top four - but the game was marred by an incident in the first half.

Shortly after the half hour mark, the Arsenal bench called over the fourth official and reported an incident.

The Premier League has since confirmed it was a racist abuse allegation.

It's understood it may have come from a Leeds supporter, who directed remarks at the Arsenal substitutes.

"It was reported and the stadium manager will have to deal with that with the authorities", Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports after the game.

"Very disappointed because we have done so much in football to try to avoid it," he said, "but it is a single person. I don't think that merits that a full stadium pays the price.

"It was a single incident and it has to be reported. It was reported, and now the authorities will have to work with the clubs to understand what happened."

The game itself represented another good result for Arteta and Arsenal.

They raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to two Gabriel Martinelli goals and an effort from Bukayo Saka shortly before the break.

Leeds briefly hinted at a revival when Raphinha converted a penalty after 75 minutes.

But Emile Smith Rowe capped off a good display for the visitors with a late goal.

It is the Gunners third win on the trot, and puts them just five points off the top three.
