Iheanacho rewarded for brilliant form and named Premier League player of the month

Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho’s brilliant form in March has seen him named the Premier League’s EA Sports Player of the Month.

The Nigeria international scored five goals in March, including an equaliser for the Foxes against Brighton & Hove Albion, a stunning volley away at Burnley, and a hat-trick in City’s 5-0 win against Sheffield United at King Power Stadium.

He was one of eight players shortlisted for the award and beat the likes of Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw to the accolade.

The 24-year-old praised the support of his teammates upon receiving the award.

"I’m so pleased and honoured to win this award. It’s great to be recognised, but I couldn’t have done it without the support of my team-mates and the manager.

"I’m really enjoying playing at the minute and hopefully I can push on and help the team to finish as high as possible this season."

Leicester City are currently third in the Premier League table and look on track to finish in one of the Champions League places.

They're also in the last four of the FA Cup and will face Southampton in their semi-final at the King Power Stadium later this month.

Their focus for now though must remain on this weekend's massive clash with champions-elect Manchester City in the Premier League.

It will see Iheanacho face his former club where he played between 2015 and 2017.

Speaking ahead of that game, Leicester City manager Brendan Rogers spoke highly of Nigerian international Iheanacho .

"Since he has come into the team he has just been fantastic.

"I am delighted for him because he is such a conscientious guy, such an honest guy, and as you can see now, a very talented player.

"If you think of his journey, he has been the young player at Manchester City after being the player of the tournament at the Under-17 World Cup. He breaks in, scores some goals, but there are gifted players ahead of him so it is difficult to get that game time.

"He then makes a move to Leicester where he has Jamie Vardy here, one of the top strikers in the Premier League. Plus, you have the adaptation of leaving Manchester City and coming to another club so that is always going to take that bit of time.

"I know when I came here that there were probably times when there were grumbles if he was playing but he has very quickly won over people. That is just through hard work, resilience and talent. What you are seeing is a young player at the top of his game."
