Harry Kane "wants to be defined by winning things" | David Meyler

Harry Kane is reportedly considering his future at Tottenham following their "embarrassing" Europa League exit at Dinamo Zagreb last week.

The England captain says they “dropped below" their expected standards in that defeat and in the recent loss to rivals Arsenal in the North London derby.

Kane is yet to win a win a trophy with Spurs and David Ornstein of The Athletic believes the 27-year-old is now open to leaving the club.

"The consensus is that he would like to leave Tottenham but he can’t say that publicly," Ornstein told Sky Sports News when asked about links of a move to Premier League champions elect Manchester City.

“He’s very committed while he’s at the club but he wants to go and win trophies, he’s said that publicly, he’s made it incredibly clear that he wants to win multiple trophies, the biggest trophies in football.”

“It doesn’t look like he’s going to be able to do that at Tottenham, so I think he would be open to a transfer."

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder David Meyler agrees that Kane will feel he's entering a crucial period in his career.

"I think Harry Kane wants to win a trophy and wants to break Alan Shearer's goalscoring record," Meyler said of Kane's motivations on this morning's OTB AM. "That's got to be the two main objectives on his mind.

"Does he feel like he's going to win a trophy at Spurs? That's the big thing. There's been that link every now and then about Harry Kane going to Manchester City.

"I think he wants to be defined by winning things. Even if you look at Gareth Bale joining, there will be conversations behind the scenes when you're at breakfast or lunch or heading to games.

"He'll have got that sense of Gareth going and winning all those Champions Leagues, he'll be hungry to win something but it's a case of whether he'll feel he'll be able to do that at Spurs or not.

"He's 27 now and heading toward 28, he's at the age where he probably has one move left in him in yet. He has a lot to think about this summer."

Challenging for the big trophies

Tottenham will play City in next month's EFL Cup final but Meyler says they'll need to be contending for the Premier League and Champions League if the club are to match Kane's ambitions.

"With the calibre of player he is, he definitely wants to be challenging for the Premier League and the Champions League. Under Pochettino, there was that year when they could have pushed Leicester closer (in the Premier League title race) and losing to Liverpool in the Champions League final.

"He has been there but does he feel that Spurs can get back there challenging for those big trophies?  FA Cups and League Cups aren't enough for a player like him, he'll want more.

"Recruitment needs to be better. It's hard to knock Mourinho because of the success he's had over the past. With every single club he's been at, he's won trophies. Something doesn't fit right at Spurs though, is there two or three players that don't fit the mould? Will Levy give him the money to recruit the players that he wants?

"When Son (Heung-Min) is injured, Kane is carrying the whole weight. Carlos Vinícius is not at the level, it's a big drop off. When Kane picked up that ankle issue, Son struggled because he was trying to carry the whole team. They need more squad depth and they need to stop conceding goals.
