Granit Xhaka ruled out with 'significant' knee injury

Arsenal look set to be without Granit Xhaka until the new year.

The midfielder is said to have suffered 'significant' medial knee ligament damage last weekend.

He sustained the injury in the Gunners' impressive 3-1 north London derby win over Tottenham.

Arsenal today confirmed the extent of the injury, which they say will rule the Switzerland captain out for a period of three months.

"Further to injuring his right knee during Sunday’s match against Tottenham Hotspur, assessments and scans have confirmed that Granit Xhaka suffered a significant injury to his medial knee ligament," their statement read.

"A specialist consultation took place in London on Tuesday evening which has determined that Granit does not require surgery.

"Granit’s recovery and rehabilitation programme will start immediately and we are aiming for him to be back in action in approximately three months.

"Everyone at the club will now be supporting and working hard with Granit to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible."

Xhaka's injury came after receiving contact from Lucas Moura in the build up to Spurs' solitary goal at the Emirates.

Xhaka's period on the sidelines will also coincide with some international action.

Among the games he will miss for the Swiss is a World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland next month.
