John Giles believes Jose Mourinho would do well to heed the methods of Alex Ferguson when it comes to criticism of his Manchester United players.
Mourinho was publicly critical of left back Luke Shaw - not for the first time this season - openly scrutinising the player's understanding of the game.
"I don't think it's the right way for any manager to criticise your players publicly. I've never seen it work in football," said John on Off The Ball.
"Whatever you do, you do in the dressing room. Fergie was quite a hot-tempered guy but if you look back over his career at Manchester United when they talk about the hairdryer, that was always in the dressing room.
"Actually he defended the players an awful lot when they didn't do well, even in his early days. I don't remember him actually turning on a player and saying 'he let me down, he didn't do this, he didn't do that'. He took the responsibility for it himself and he also got the accolades for the success of the team.
"They'd say in the dressing room, 'Oh, he had the hairdryer' but it was in the privacy of the dressing room."
At the weekend, Mourinho had been critical of his forward players in their 0-0 stalemate against West Brom and Marcus Rashford, who had been a revelation during his debut campaign last season, has not been able to replicate the same form ever since the new manager took charge at Old Trafford.
"I think Rashford in particular, who I think is an outstanding young player, I think he's lost his confidence. He's edgy now. I've never found a player who liked or could accept being criticised publicly. It shouldn't happen," he said.
