Manchester United are still a long way away - John Giles

John Giles joined Nathan Murphy on The Football Show on Thursday to discuss Manchester United, Erik ten Hag and the Premier League run-in.

Manchester United's season was on track to finish strong not so long ago.

But after crashing out of Europe at the hands of Sevilla, Manchester United now face the prospect of falling out of the top four. Erik ten Hag's team lost to Brighton two weeks ago and then they lost to West Ham on Sunday. Liverpool's good form puts them one point behind their bitter rivals for fourth place.

Although Manchester United have a game in hand, their recent form suggests they can't assume that will result in three points.

John Giles believes that this faltering was inevitable. Manchester United overachieved to get where they are and they have shown signs of their worrying inconsistency at different times throughout the season. The problem? Giles thinks they simply don't have the squad yet.

"I don't think they're good enough, I don't think they've got good enough players," Giles said.

"They're alright on their day but they haven't got that attitude that Arsenal have at the moment. They're very inconsistent. In the match last week against West Ham for example, I thought they were terrible. Terrible! Some of the positions they have, the two fullbacks at Manchester United for example are a problem.

"Fernandes, you don't know what he's going to do. I don't think they've improved as much as all of us thought they had improved to be honest. They're too inconsistent in the way that they play and give away goals. I think he's improved them, but I don't think he's improved them enough to say they're on their way.

"Not by a long way."

Manchester United face Wolves at 3:00pm on Saturday.

Manchester City must start Riyad Mahrez against Real Madrid in the second leg.
