Gerrard should stay put than move to Villa | Kenny Cunningham

Former Birmingham player and Ireland international Kenny Cunningham believes Rangers' manager would be better suited staying in Glasgow, as opposed to making a move for Aston Villa.

Aston Villa let go of manager Dean Smith after a poor run of performances. On Wednesday, Sky Sports reported that Gerrard himself is open to filling the position.

Rangers however have had no official contact from Villa for their boss.

Speaking on OTBAM on Wednesday, Cunningham stressed that winning titles and doing well in Europe should be Gerrard's priority – especially if his intentions are to manage Liverpool one day.

"For me personally, I would argue, if he wants to make that big step to Liverpool, I don’t think Aston Villa is the way to do it. I still feel if he sits tight, at Rangers, for the next two and a half years or so, and maintains the level of success that he’s had there – that will stand to him more than moving to Villa" says Cunningham.

Gerrard at Rangers

Gerrard has not taken long to prove himself as a top manager up in Scotland. In just two years at the club, Gerrard has already won the Scottish Premiership in the 2020/21 season, without losing a single match.

Moreover, Rangers' triumph also ended their rival's, Celtic, nine-year reign at the helm of Scottish football.

Gerrard to Villa?

While Cunningham didn't doubt Gerrard's ability to do a good role at Villa, he did wonder about the difficulty of the job at hand.

"The only reason he’s going to bounce from Aston Villa to Liverpool is to be a big success at Aston Villa," says Cunnigham.

"And that’s by taking Aston Villa where they are at the moment, not only pushing them through the top half of the table but towards those European places," Cunningham continued.

"He’s proven that he can win league titles at Rangers. For me, that’s still a stronger argument, of bouncing to Liverpool from Rangers than it is at Aston Villa,” says Cunningham.

Managerial firings all-round

November has already proved to be the month of managerial sackings in the English Premier League, with the rat race now commencing for clubs to find replacements over the international break.

Along with Smith's dismissal, Spurs let go of Nuno Espirito Santo while sacked Norwich's Daniel Farke.
