From manager to chief executive in the space of an hour: Jackie McNamara's York City rollercoaster continues

From the outside, York City looks like a club in crisis.

October 2016, will not be a month remembered fondly by fans of the Conference club. Having being relegated last season from League 2, the team are struggling this season in the non-league top-flight.

Jackie McNamara vowed to resign earlier this month if the team failed to get a "positive result" against Braintree Tow. York City drew 1-1, and McNamara announced his resignation. Despite resigned, he stayed with the club in a caretaker capacity until a replacement was found.

On Sunday afternoon, Gary Mills was named manager for a second spell with the club. He previously managed them from 2010 to 2013. Will Mills' appointment, it looked like McNamara's involvement with the club has come to an end.

Less than an hour after Mills' announcment, the club confirmed that the former Scottish international was named as Chief Executive!

"Jackie will focus on all operational aspects of the Club with specific attention paid to the development of a communication strategy, effective both internally and externally, administration management, aspects of the Academy, aspects of the Foundation and commerciality to name just a few of the areas of his involvement", the club confirmed in a statement.

"When required by the First Team Manager, assistance will also be provided by the Chairman and Chief Executive, especially in relation to certain financial aspects of the playing budget. It is imperative that we support the First Team Manager by taking away the non-playing issues so he can focus on results."

"It has become abundantly clear that a full-time Chief Executive is required at York City Football Club and Jackie is keen to implement and conclude the work we began to overhaul the Club from top to bottom confirmed in the Chairman’s Statement in April this year."

An unpopular figure, among the club's fans, McNamara's appointment has understandably not been positively received.
