John Giles joined Off The Ball on Thursday night to discuss Frank Lampard and Everton.
Everton need a new manager.
There are a couple of candidates but the longer it goes on the more likely Frank Lampard is hired. Lampard is a polarizing manager. He was a world-class player for Chelsea, but he failed quickly as the club's manager. He never should have had that role having only been a manager of Derby for a short period before it.
John Giles thinks Lampard can be a very good manager. He sees Lampard as a smart football man and someone who didn't get enough time at Chelsea.
"If he really is going to be a successful manager, then he's a good chance of doing it at Everton," Giles said.
"That's what I think. He's a very good player as we know. And he'd have ideas in the game of what he wants to do with players, what he sees in players. Now, he has that from the day he finished playing. Even when he was playing if and when he wanted to go into management, this is what he would do and this is what he believes in doing.
"Now even at the early stage, he's either right or he's wrong in that particular way."
Despite Thomas Tuchel succeeding with Lampard's players after he left, Giles doesn't think that is an indictment of Lampard. Giles appreciated what he saw from Lampard's Chelsea side. The results may not have been consistent but the performances inspired the Ireland football legend.
"At Chelsea, I thought he was doing a good job. So you could say his ideas there were basic ideas and looked good. They looked promising before he had a chance to finish on it.
"All managers have a different way and a different approach. Tuchel is very, very good at getting players organized, standing no nonsense whatsoever. Very, very strict in what he does. Frank, when he played, was very loose. The game that he played himself, he was a good goalscorer from midfield. Everybody has different ideas on the game. I don't know what his ideas are on the game.
"But eventually you can see it in a manager...so what he was doing at Chelsea was promising. He didn't have time to finish it. You would have had to judge him after another two years."
