First of two Waterford players return negative test for coronavirus

Waterford suspended their club activities as two of their players were tested for coronavirus. The club has confirmed that the first of those two tests have come back with a negative result.

Two players reported as suffering from flu-like symptoms, one of the which was reported before John Sheridan's side played Shelbourne at Tolka Park on Saturday.

The player who reported symptoms ahead of the game at Tolka Park did not take to the field, according to reports.

The news ensured that Tuesday evening's game against Sligo Rovers was cancelled.

While the club has confirmed that one of the test results returned as negative, they have also stated that the player in question will remain in quarantine as he is still feeling unwell.

"The first player tested for COVID-19 has received his test results and the result was negative," the club's statement read.

"The player is still feeling unwell and we will remain in isolation until he's feeling well enough to train."

The news comes only a day after the club's doctor, Sinead Fitzpatrick, resigned from her role at the club. There was no indication from Waterford as to whether Fitzpatrick's resignation was linked to the suspected coronavirus cases.

Waterford are due to host Cork City at home on Saturday. As of the time of writing that game is still set to go ahead.

The Blues' 1-0 win over Shelbourne was Sheridan's first game in charge following the resignation of Alan Reynolds. Reynolds has since taken up a coaching role with the Irish under-21s.

Waterford confirmed today that the second player is still awaiting his test results.

"The second player is still awaiting the results of his test so although this is much-welcomed news, we still have a suspected case and will continue to follow FAI and HSE protocol in conjunction with the Waterford FC Covid-19 team."

The victory against Shelbourne took Waterford to fifth place in the table.
