Fans back Mourinho after recent performances

The atmosphere around Old Trafford appears to be lifting after a difficult opening two months of the season, according to football writer Andy Mitten.

"The mood has changed since the victory against Newcastle and more so the performance against Chelsea last weekend," says Mitten.

Up to two weeks ago, online polls among Manchester United fans were showing that almost 80% wanted Jose Mourinho to be relieved of his duties but that was "never reflective" on match-days.

However, if the club were to base their decisions on online polls, "there would be no players left at the club" from the current crop as everyone has come in for criticism in recent years.

Mitten also believes that fans have become more aware of the situation at Old Trafford and that is largely down to Gary Neville's honest analysis on his former club. "Gary Neville is hugely influential within the club and he has been pretty clear with his criticism in where the faults lie at Manchester United," said Mitten.

"I don't think its personal with Gary. I think he is a United fan, as is Paul Scholes, and he is very frustrated watching this team that he was so successful with flounder, despite paying top dollar on players," added Mitten.

Mourinho's relationship with the players also seems to be improving and a key example for this is the recent performances of Anthony Martial, who has scored three goals in the last two Premier League games.

Interestingly, reports this week have claimed that Real Madrid are on the verge of sacking manager Julen Lopetegui and would be willing to replace him with Jose Mourinho should he leave Old Trafford.

Mourinho remains popular among hardcore fans in Madrid and holds a close relationship with club president Florentino Perez.

"I think if Jose Mourinho turned around and said 'OK you don't want me here I'm off', a lot of Man United fans would quickly backtrack."

Is Mourinho the right man to guide Manchester United to success?
