Paul Cooke becomes executive lead of FAI

The FAI has appointed former newspaper publisher Paul Cooke as the new executive lead of the association on Tuesday afternoon.

This comes after John Foley stepped away from taking the reins as interim CEO yesterday, in what was due to be his first day.

Waterford native Cooke was elected vice president of the association at the AGM in July and he now basically becomes interim CEO.

The FAI also stated via Twitter that "the board met Monday night to discuss the interim CEO position in the wake of John Foley’s decision not to take on the role. The Board agreed that the most pressing matter is the appointment of the four Independent Directors and the Independent Chairperson."

Minister for Sport Shane Ross issued a statement yesterday evening saying that the new CEO should be "completely independent of any present or previous involvement with the FAI."

He also went on to say that 'the most urgent priority for the FAI should be the appointment of the four independent directors'.
