How England can get the best from Harry Kane | Mark Lawrenson

As England revel in a famous win over Germany, Mark Lawrenson has had some tips for how they can get more out of Harry Kane.

Lawrenson was speaking to Off The Ball after England's 2-0 win, with Kane scoring after an otherwise limp performance to get his tournament off and running.

The former Liverpool defender says that

Lawro on Kane

"The other week when it started and everyone was on him, I just said 'get him some chances, get people up and around him.' Grealish came on and made a difference, Raheem Sterling did extremely well.

"If you watch Harry Kane at Tottenham, he has Son in and around him who drops off and vice versa. He's got lots of movement.

"The problem for him is that the ball from back to front for England generally comes very, very slowly unless Pickford has pinged a 70-yarder.

"He's virtually up there on his own as the others around him sit quite deep. He's often surrounded by three or four players, so it's difficult. But as soon as Grealish got on, his movement was fabulous and he just didn't miss.

"It's a bit like feeding the dog because he's hungry."

Declan Rice on England critics

Meanwhile, Declan Rice has said that England answered their critics with the result on Tuesday afternoon.

"It’s incredible," Rice said to BBC Sport after the match, "A lot of people, you look at the group stage games, they’ve written us off.

“Complaints about the performances, not scoring enough goals.

"You read a load of things but as players you put that to the back of your mind and you want to prove people wrong.

“I think today, everyone had that fire in their belly to go out there and one, knock Germany out the tournament and two, for us, progress to the next round.

“It’s history. In the press conference this week all the players have been asked about the previous games against Germany but today we created our own bit of history.

“Gary Neville was saying last night these games don’t come around often and we’ve made the most of that opportunity today.

"It was pleasure to be out there on that pitch.”
