Karen Duggan of Peamount United explained her grief after that shocking final day in the Women's National League.
Shelbourne won their first Women's National League title since 2016 on Saturday.
The Dublin-based side beat Wexford Youths 3-2 on the final day of the season. A nervous final six minutes followed Wexford's second goal, but Shelbourne held on until the end. Peamount United entered the final day of the season in control of their own fate. A win would guarantee them the title.
Alas, Peamount United lost 5-2 at home to Galway. It was a shocking result that made the final day more dramatic than anyone anticipated.
Unfortunately for the Off The Ball family, COYGIG Podcast host Karen Duggan was on the losing side. Duggan gave her reaction to Kathleen McNamee on this week's show.
"I suppose I'm in the history books for being part of the biggest implosions ever seen in women's sport," Duggan said.
"Obviously, it's a really, really bad couple of weeks as a Peamount United player. We had two opportunities to win the league and underperformed in both games. I'm obviously not taking away from Shelbourne. They did what they had to do. They had to win their last two games, they did as expected.
"We were expected to win and we didn't do it."
Shelbourne had finished runners-up three seasons in a row. In each of the last two seasons, they were runners-up to Peamount United. Therefore, Duggan knows what she missed out on at the weekend.
"It feels like a league lost rather than a Shelbourne win to me obviously but those girls are obviously delighted. I live with Amanda Budden, the Shelbourne goalkeeper, so we're keeping our distance for the last couple of days. It's still a bit raw. I actually think she nearly feels sorry for me. It's that bad of an implosion."
Duggan isn't blaming her teammates. Instead, she points the finger at herself.
"My own performance was absolutely scandalous as well. I've nothing to hide behind. We'll be a long time licking our wounds after that one. You nearly just want to start the league again straight away."
