Republic of Ireland and Tottenham Hotspur defender has reportedly been ruled out of the rest of the season with a MCL injury.
The reports come out of London as the 30-year-old sustained the injury against Aston Villa on Saturday. He went down and was treated after a challenge from Matty Cash early in the 4-0 win.
Although he attempted to play on through the injury, Doherty was subbed off in the 21st minute. The injury comes just as Doherty was finding his form at Spurs under Antonio Conte.
He had scored twice and assisted in two more goals in Spurs' last five matches. It is understood that scans on the injury have revealed that Doherty has ruptured his medial collateral ligament in his knee and will be out for up to 12 weeks.
This is bad news for Stephen Kenny as well as Conte, as it not only rules him out of the Premier League season, but almost guarantees that the defender will miss Ireland's Nations League matches in June.
Doherty has been a mainstay of Kenny's sides, and has been a major factor in their recent good performances.
Ireland are due to play Ukraine in the first game of the Nations league in early June. However, that match is yet to be confirmed due to Russia's ongoing invasion of the country.
Kenny's side are due to face Armenia and Scotland in the Nations League in June as well, and will likely be doing so without the Spurs defender.
