David de Gea is still the best goalkeeper in the world, according to his Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Spanish international came in for criticism for performance in United's 1-1 draw at Tottenham on Friday night, with Gary Neville claiming that de Gea's poor form is more than just simply a blip.
"He was the one player United could rely upon for the last four years but he's not the same," former United captain Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast this week.
"He hasn't been the same for some time. When form drops for six months it's a blip but when it goes on for a year you start to worry. When it goes over two years it becomes more permanent.
"That is now a fair representation of what De Gea is as he's making lots of mistakes. Ones he would never make - he was always somebody you could completely rely upon. It can only be a confidence thing. The arms, legs and body are the same - it's got to be the mind."
But Solskjaer has again come out in defence of his goalkeeper today, amid calls for United to recall Dean Henderson from loan to be their number one next season.
"David is the best goalkeeper in the world," the Norwegian coach said this morning.
"He's conceded two goals in the last seven games he's played for us. There are two games against City, Chelsea, of course Tottenham, Everton. Two goals in seven games, we've gone on a run not conceding goals.
"He makes great saves, he wins games for us and I still think he's the best goalkeeper in the world.
"David's working really hard. He's not making errors that you see time and time again. He's been consistently working hard in training and I'm very pleased with his work."
