David Moyes appointed new Sunderland manager

David Moyes has been appointed as the new Sunderland manager, taking over from Sam Allardyce at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats did not waste any time in appointing Allardyce's successor and looked in the direction of the former Everton, Manchester United and Real Sociedad manager to fill the gap.

Moyes has been out of work since losing his job at Real Sociedad in November of last year, and could only manage a year at the club, finishing 12th in the only season he finished as the manager.

While he is remembered mostly for his short and ill-fated stint at Manchester United, he managed to keep Everton competitive on a shoe-string budget for several years, and has a set of skills that might be best suited for a club like Sunderland.

Upon his hiring, Moyes said: "I am delighted to have joined Sunderland. I am relishing the challenge and excited by the opportunity.

"I have taken over a big British club, with a great support and I'm looking forward to working in the Premier League again. I look forward to continuing the good work done by Sam."

He has signed a four-year deal with the club.

Speaking about the appointment, chairman Ellis Short decided to take aim at a long list of the club's former managers, stating that Moyes has been his main target for a long time.

Short told Sunderland's official website that: “He is a man whose football pedigree speaks for itself and is someone I have long admired. I have spoken with him on many occasions and I have always been hugely impressed.

"He was my number one managerial target for the last five appointments, but his desire to honour existing contracts meant we were not able to bring him to Sunderland previously."
