Danny Ings suffers new injury blow as he's ruled out for the rest of the season

Danny Ings' Liverpool career got off to a bad start after an ACL tear forced him out of action for the majority of last season, and the former Burnley man will once again miss substantial playing time after suffering another injury.

Ings was injured in last week's EFL Cup game against Spurs, and will require surgery on the injury that rules him out for the rest of the season.

His hopes of making it into manager Jurgen Klopp's starting side were slim at the start of the season, given how well they had been performing up front and scoring goals, but this new injury means that he faces another long road to recovery before he can hope to stake his claim to feature in the team.

However, the silver lining to the bad news is that the injury is not a repeat of the cruciate ligament damage he suffered in his left knee last season.

According to The Telegraph, the injury is to the cartilage of his right knee, and the initial assessment is that he will need at least seven months to recover.

In a statement, Liverpool confirmed that he will undergo surgery on the injury in London on Wednesday.

"To say we are gutted would be an understatement," said Klopp. "He is such a great boy and has worked so hard that he deserves better luck than this.

"It is typical of Danny's personality, on and off the pitch, that he picked up this injury to his knee when courageously trying to win the ball back for his team by making a tackle. But it is this same personality that means he will come back as good and as strong from this latest setback as he has done in the past."
