Man City v Real Madrid postponed due to coronavirus

Manchester City have announced today that their Champions League fixture at home to Real Madrid has been postponed due to coronavirus fears.

In a statement City said:

“The decision to postpone Tuesday’s game was made in conjunction with UEFA and follows confirmation that players from Real Madrid will self-isolate for fifteen days, after it emerged that a player from the club’s basketball team tested positive for COVID-19.

“[Manchester City] sends its best wishes to the players and staff at Real Madrid’s football and basketball teams.

“Further information regarding the rescheduled date and related ticketing information will follow in due course,” the statement concluded.

Manchester City won the first leg a fortnight ago in the Bernabeu 2-1 after initially falling behind to a goal from Isco.

In the wake of Real Madrid going into quarantine, it was also announced today that La Liga has been suspended “for at least the next two matchdays of the league campaign,” a statement from the league said.

“Given the circumstances that have come to light this morning, such as the quarantine put in place at Real Madrid and possible positive cases at other clubs, LaLiga has decided to continue with the next phase of the protocol of action against COVID-19.

“This decision will be re-evaluated after the completion of the quarantines undertaken at the affected clubs and other possible situations that may arise,” the league said in a statement.

In the Europa League, Roma’s flight from Italy was denied permission to land in Spain ahead of their game against Sevilla.

The match at the San Siro between Inter Milan and Getafe was due to be played behind closed doors but UEFA announced that the tie has also been postponed because of coronavirus fears.

Current figures indicate that Spain has just under 3,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 84 deaths.
