'I was doing stuff I'd never dreamed of' - David Connolly on retiring

As he brings the curtain down on a 20-year career in professional football, this is the first opportunity for former Ireland striker David Connolly to look back.

The former Sunderland, Feyenoord, Wimbledon and West Ham forward announced his retirement at the weekend and tonight on Off The Ball, he was in reflective mood.

"When I look back at it, I've had no real complaints. I scored a hat-trick on my league debut for Watford. I played for Ireland which I never thought I would do. I scored my first goal for Ireland and I remember it like it was yesterday in the US Cup. I scored a hat-trick for Ireland again, which I thought I would never do and played with some amazing players," he told us tonight, adding that he was "doing stuff he'd never dreamed of".

The 2002 World Cup squad member looked back on the challenges of managing to attain 40-odd caps, why he thinks Ireland should have reached three major tournaments between 1998 and 2002, and also explained why he called it a day at the age of 37.

"I was running around and I felt it was a young man's game and it was probably a little bit beyond me. I'd probably felt like that for the past season or two," said Connolly of his final spell at AFC Wimbledon in League 2.

He also dispelled some myths about his spell at Feyenoord.
