Liverpool have withdrawn Joel Matip from their match-day squad facing Man United today, after they failed to get clarity from FIFA regarding his eligibility during the period of the African Nations Cup.
Matip from Cameroon, has not played for his country since September 2015 and was one of seven Cameroon players who declined the opportunity to play in the tournament.
Cameroon boss Hugo Bross has previously tried to persuade Matip to return to the squad.
The Premier League side believe he is eligible to line out for club activity, and claim they have made several attempts to seek clearance from FIFA, to allow Matip to play for them.
Meanwhile, the Cameroonian Football Federation say it "reserves the right to take action against these players in line with FIFA regulations." Matip was initially named in the 35-man squad for the tournament and his name was later removed.

Liverpool have released a statement in relation to the matter.
"Liverpool Football Club can confirm Joel Matip has been withdrawn from selection for today's Premier League fixture at Manchester United as the club continues to seek clarity from FIFA as to the player's eligibility."
"This includes assurances the player was called up for the tournament in accordance with the world governing body's regulations."
"It is Liverpool's view that the player should be available for club football during the period of the competition and will continue to work for a speedy and unambiguous resolution."
