Ciaran Clark would miss Euro 2020 but James McClean making progress

Republic of Ireland defender Ciaran Clark is likely to be sidelined until June after undergoing ankle surgery.

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has confirmed that the 30-year-old opted go under the knife to help resolve the ankle ligament damage suffered in last month's loss at Arsenal.

Bruce added that Clark would probably miss Euro 2020 were Ireland to qualify and the tournament go ahead.

"If they qualify, then I think it would be unlikely if the Euros were to start on June 11. I can't see it. Maybe, though."

Newcastle's Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is also on the Magpies' treatment table and Bruce says he'll be sidelined for at least a moment with a knee injury.

There's postitive news, though, on James McClean's recovery from knee ligament injury with the winger resuming light training with his club Stoke.

"James has been on the training pitch but still with the medical team, he's not back in full training yet," revealed Potters' boss Michael O'Neill.

"He seems to be progressing quite well. He had a little setback last week, so we had to ease off on him a little bit.

"The good thing about James is that he is desperate to play. He's pushing very hard to get back and be in contention for selection again.
