Chelsea in talks to sign Rennes keeper Edouard Mendy

Chelsea's spending spree looks set to continue with the club in discussions to sign Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The 28-year old has reportedly already agreed a five-year deal with the Premier League club.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is looking for competition for his current no.1 Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has failed to impress in his time in West London.

Such was the Spaniard's fall from grace that 38-year old Willy Caballero started last month's FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal.

Should the deal go through, Mendy wouldn't be the first goalkeeper to swap Rennes for Chelsea. Petr Cech made the same move in 2004, going on to make nearly 500 appearances for the Blues.

Chelsea's pre-season spending already stands at an eye-watering €223.5million, with the Ivory Coast international likely to add €25million to that bill.

"Yes, discussions have been initiated," Rennes president Nicolas Holveck said on Wednesday, "But we are at the stage of discussions, there is no agreement, far from it.

"We know the value of the man and the player. I understand Edouard's desire, it's part of the transfer window… But I'm unable to tell you what's going to happen."

Mendy only joined Rennes from Reims last summer, but impressed at the Ligue 1 club last term making 33 appearances in all competitions.
