Bundesliga season to finish in June as May fixtures announced

The German football league have released Bundesliga fixtures after the top two divisions were given the green light to resume.

The government are permitting just the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 to recommence their season while adhering to strict health and safety guidelines and playing matches behind closed doors.

Both divisions, which still have 9 rounds of matches to play, will recommence on 16 May and the DFL is aiming to have completed the 2019/20 season by the last weekend in June

Football has been suspended since mid-March in Germany where the daily coronavirus infection rate continues to drop.

A special general meeting of the 36 Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs to discuss the resumption of play took place today and it was decided to begin play again on 16 May.

The DFL statement reads: "The season continues in both leagues with the 26th matchday, the other matchdays follow in the order originally intended.

"It is planned that the last day of the Bundesliga or 2nd Bundesliga will be played on June 27 and 28 respectively.

"Since an adjustment of the basic schedule is necessary to schedule the game days until the end of the season, there are currently final coordination talks with the DFB.

The DFL statement also addresses the two Borussia Monchengladbach staff members who tested positive for COVID-19.

"The second wave of the Corona tests planned before the start of the team training has now been completed. It comprised 1,695 samples," the statement reads.

"Two cases of infection were identified and immediately reported to the local health authorities, who decide on the measures to be taken."
