Budapest to welcome crowd for UEFA Super Cup

UEFA will allow fans attend a game under their jurisdiction for the first time in six months next month.

Budapest's Puskas Arena will operate at 30 per cent capacity for the UEFA Super Cup.

Champions League winners Bayern Munich are set to face Europa League winners Sevilla in the Hungarian capital on September 24.

Glasgow's Ibrox Stadium was the last in Europe to have spectators present for a European game, when Rangers lost 3-1 to Bayer Leverkusen on March 12.

Commenting on the Super Cup decision, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said, "While it has been important to show that football can carry on in difficult times, without fans, the game has lost something of its character.

"We hope to use the UEFA Super Cup in Budapest as a pilot that will begin to see the return of fans to our matches.

“We are working closely with the Hungarian Federation and its government to implement measures to ensure the health of all those attending and participating in the game.

"We will not take risks with people’s safety."

The Puskas Arena's capacity is 67,215, meaning it could welcome 20,164 for next month's meeting of Bayern and Sevilla.

Last week UEFA confirmed that next month's Nations League matches would all be played behind closed doors.

European football's governing body said, "It would be too early to already allow fans into the upcoming UEFA national team competitions matches to be played at the beginning of September and that test match(es) should take place to study precisely the impact of spectators on current medical protocols."
