Dutch legend Marco van Basten believes that Donny van de Beek made a mistake when he signed for Manchester United.
The 23-year-old midfielder has only played 61 minutes in the Premier League for United after arriving from Ajax for £40million in the summer.
Many fans of the Old Trafford club were puzzled on Saturday as van de Beek was once again left on the bench by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during United's 0-0 draw with Chelsea.
"I know he is earning loads and loads more than he used to. But as a top player you have to be critical and look at the chances of playing when you sign for a new club.
"Donny should have waited for better prospects and signed for another club."
Solskjaer though has insisted on several occasions that van de Beek is a big part of his plans going forward.
"Of course, it’s competition for places, it’s giving him time to settle in and adjust to his new teammates and a new league," the United boss said.
"He’s absolutely a top footballer, a top personality, so humble and hard working but also eager to play more.
"As I’ve said so many times, you’ll see him throughout the season, it’s going to be a long, long season and he’s impressed me."
Solskjaer's side have a big week ahead as they face RB Leipzig on Wednesday in the Champions League at Old Trafford before Mikel Arteta's Arsenal travel to Manchester on Sunday.
