Belgian FA may struggle to meet €1m payoff for Marc Wilmots

The Belgian football association will struggle to meet a payoff clause should they sack manager Marc Wilmots, chief executive Gerard Linard has confirmed.

The Belgians crashed out after a 3-1 quarter-final defeat to Wales and will be forced to pay €1m should they part company with Wilmots.

"The indemnity for Marc Wilmots is at least €1m," Linard said in an interview which was picked up by the Belgian print press.

"That's a problem for the federation as we do not have the same budget as France, Spain or Germany."

Belgium have failed to live up to expectations at the 2014 World Cup as well as this summer's Championships in France. Many critics claim Wilmots has failed to get the most out of a "golden generation" of players.

"I believe an internationally renowned name such as Van Gaal is not affordable for the Belgian federation... unless the manager in question makes some real concessions," he added.
