Atletico Madrid chief dismisses Griezmann to Man United talk

Atletico Madrid's president has played down the prospect of Antoine Griezmann potentially joining Manchester United.

Enrique Cerezo was asked about speculation leaking the France international star with a summer transfer to Old Trafford.

His tongue in cheek response was "small team" according to Spanish sports daily Marca.

Griezmann has a contract at Atletico that runs until 2021 and Cerezo emphasised that fact.

"I believe in the contracts that people sign, and that goes for Diego Simeone and Griezmann," he said.

Griezmann's adviser Sebastien Bellencontre had been recently quoted as saying a move to United would be "ideal", citing that the player idolised former Man United No 7 David Beckham.

Cerezo has been president of Atletico Madrid since 2002 and it is in recent years that the club have enjoyed a rapid ascent under the control of manager Diego Simeone.

They won their first La Liga title in 18 years in the 2013-14 season and have also reached two Champions League finals in three years, losing to city rivals Real Madrid on both occasions.

The club also won the Europa League and a Copa del Rey under Simeone.

Off the pitch, Atletico have climbed from outside the Top 20 and into the Top 15 in the Deloitte Money League since the 2011-12 season and are also due to move into new stadium Wanda Metropolitano next season.
