Aston Villa eye up Steven Gerrard to fill managerial vacancy

Steven Gerrard has emerged as one of the favourites to become the new Aston Villa manager.

The Liverpool legend is believed to be on a shortlist put together by the club.

Villa are on the lookout for a new boss following the dismissal of Dean Smith over the weekend.

His time at the helm came to an end following a loss to Southampton on Friday.

It was their fifth successive reversal in the Premier League - which leaves them 16th in the table.

Smith had been in charge for just over three years, guiding the club back to the Premier League in his first season.

They subsequently retained their top-flight status.

It's reported that the club has put together a shortlist of candidates to succeed Smith at Villa Park.

Gerrard's name is included, with the former Liverpool star currently over the Scottish Premiership champions Rangers.

The 41-year-old has been at Ibrox since 2018, guiding the club to the league title earlier this year.

It's also believed that former Everton boss Roberto Martinez is on the list.

The Spaniard is currently in charge of the Belgian national team but could be persuaded to return to the Premier League.

Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand is also thought to be in the frame.

Reports suggest Aston Villa want to have a new manager in place to take charge of their next Premier League fixture.

They return to league action on Saturday week against Brighton, following the international break.
