'As Shels fans, we're really concerned about this'

According to today's Irish Independent, Dublin City Council have struck a deal to buy Dalymount Park, with Shelbourne and current tenants Bohemians are expected to use the stadium when planned redevelopment is completed.

But according to Shelbourne's 1895 Supporters Trust chairman Lee Daly, the newspaper report is not wholly accurate.

"What the Independent seems to be reporting is that Bohs and Zurich have agreed a price. What that seems to require is that Tolka Park (Shel's current home ground) comes into the remit of Dublin City Council and they'll use the money for redeveloping Tolka to pay back Dalymount. So the Independent's headline that the city council has agreed a deal is not accurate. That kind of deal would have to be approved by the councillors."

Daly joined us on Off The Ball tonight alongside Roddy Collins and Stuart Byrne on the League of Ireland slot and he shared his concerns from a Shels perspective.

"From our perspective as Shels fans, we're really concerned about this," he said, adding that a move away from home would leave them "forever in Bohemians' shadows".

"I think for any football club, if you were to say that the ground that you're in is sold and you have to move to the home of your bitter rivals for over 100 years, I don't think any football fan would be particularly enthusiastic about that prospect to say the least."

Stuey also said that the "more he thinks about this idea" the more he worries about it, while he also explained why he thinks "Dalymount has had it's day" and why he feels better options could be looked at.

Roddy also agreed with Stuey and Daly's points and thinks it is being "railroaded through" by non-football supporters.

"I think sell both grounds and get a right good deal," he said of Dalymount and Tolka Park.
