Arsenal imploded yet again in their loss to Chelsea at the Emirates Stadiums, according to former Ireland international Gary Breen.
The Gunners took the lead through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 13th minute and held onto that lead for the next 70 minutes.
However, two late goals from Jorginho and Tammy Abraham won the game for Chelsea, ruining Mikel Arteta’s first home game as manager.
Speaking to Off The Ball, Breen was amazed at how the home side were able to lose the game after being in control of proceedings for so long.
“But from a goalkeeping error right at the end, they would have seen that game out. It would have been a massive boost - not only for Arteta as a manager in his first home game - but for the players more than anything.
“Because there was a real connection again with the supporters who reacted so positively to what they were seeing. The organisation - how they really frustrated a talented Chelsea team [was impressive].
The former Coventry City player felt that Arsenal have improved in their short time under Arteta, but that the old problems still remain.
“I know Chelsea have been struggling of late but they negated all their strengths. It was very difficult to play through. The likes of Ozil, who is often criticised for what he does without the ball, was very impressive. But he wasn’t alone.
“From back to front they were so good to the extent that Chelsea had to really rip up their whole game plan.
“They made an early substitution and brought Jorginho on to try to get them a foothold and try to get someone on the ball who can make passes. Because they couldn’t do it against the defensive structure of Arsenal.
“But as we keep saying, this was never going to be something that was corrected overnight.”
“Arteta says this will take time but the frustration will be that Arsenal imploded again to throw away what should have been a really encouraging win home win,” Breen said.
Arsenal take on Manchester United next on Wednesday at 8pm in the Emirates Stadium, where they will look to end their four-game Premier League winless streak.
