Amber Barrett discusses smaller goals in women's football | Women's World Cup

Amber Barrett was on Off the Ball discussing the Women’s World Cup and some of the controversial calls that have been made so far.

“One of the things that was disappointing me was some of the officiating decisions that have been going on. Not even in terms of VAR but even the time it’s taking them to make decisions about certain things.”

“The amount of hours and practice teams put in to be let down by things like your keeper being half a foot off the line. I just don’t see the logic in it.”

While Barrett believed that Scotland had made plenty of mistakes against Argentina, she said that they still didn’t deserve to lose because of the controversial penalty.

“It’s disappointing to look at it from that point of view but I suppose if you also look at it in broader terms, Scotland were 3-0 up and shouldn’t have been conceding the other two goals either. I suppose you can look at it that way but I’d feel very hard done by if it was my team anyway.”

Barrett also disagreed with the mentality that goals were too large for women’s games. She said that while she originally thought the argument was sexist she began to understand more as she read more views on it.

“When you read certain articles about it you get frustrated because you think it’s a sexism thing. When I broke it down I don’t think it was at all.”

Instead, Barrett explained that women’s teams need

“I don’t think the goals are the problem, I think it’s a lack of access to coaches, goalkeeper coaches that female players get.”

“I disagree with it but it was a fair argument when I read some of the arguments against it but give them better coaching and things will naturally improve.”
