A pre-season friendly against Huddersfield Town will hold special significance for Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool face Huddersfield Town on Wednesday evening in a pre-season friendly.

While the game may not be seen as one of the most attractive of Liverpool's summer schedule, it will hold a special place in the heart of manager Jurgen Klopp. The Championship side are managed by one of Klopp's best friends David Wagner.

The two men played together at Mainz in the 1990s, and when speaking to LFC TVKlopp spoke of his admiration for his countryman. The former Dortmund manager even brought a picture of the two men from his playing career to the interview.

"David Wagner is one of my best friends, maybe my best friend", Klopp admitted. "We played a few years together and we didn’t only play, we celebrated a few times!"

Wagner became Huddersfield manager in November 2015, weeks after Klopp took charge at Anfield. Both men worked together at Borussia Dortmund, and Klopp revealed he had no idea Wagner was about to get the job less than 60 miles from him.

"When I came back from the USA, I opened the door and first of all I saw his car sitting in front of my house and I thought 'What’s he doing here?' When I came in my wife said 'Let him tell first!'"

"I said 'You first.' He said he had spoken to a Championship club in England. I said 'Interesting, which club?' He said Huddersfield and I thought 'OK, close to Liverpool.'"

Klopp hopes to go on and have an iconic career with the Premier League side with many memorable matches. A pre-season friendly may end up near the top of that list though.
