4,000 fans gathered at Linares Deportivo's ground to pay respect to their deceased captain, Fran Carles, on Saturday.
The 26-year-old died when a weight fell on his thigh that led to a haemorrhage that spread to his kidneys and other organs.
According to Diario de Jaen, Carles was operated on Friday morning after taking a blow to his leg in the gym having paid little heed at the time to the incident.
After his gym session, he started feeling dizzy, however, and was diagnosed with multiple organ failure caused by a muscle rupture and internal bleeding.
Carles was the club's captain of the third division club and a statement released by the club said, "There are no words to express the deep sorrow we feel."
