Simone Biles to compete in Olympic beam final

Simone Biles will return to action at the Olympic Games in Tuesday's women's gymnastics beam final.

Biles is the reigning world champion on beam, having also won Olympic bronze at the Rio Games in 2016.

“We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow – Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!” the US gymnastics federation posted on social media on Monday.

The American superstar arrived at the Olympics with the realistic chance of competing for five gold medals but has not competed since she withdrew early in the women’s team final last week, citing a desire to protect her mental health.

Over the course of the week, further information emerged on Biles’s struggles as she explained that she was suffering from the twisties, a mental block that affects many of the difficult skills she competes.

“For anyone saying I quit, I didn’t quit, my mind and body are simply not in sync as you can see here,” Biles wrote on Instagram. “I don’t think you realise how dangerous this is on a hard/competition surface.”
