Salford City sack manager 9 days after winning first trophy

Salford City have sacked manager Richie Wellens after five months, and mere days after his team won their first trophy as a Football League side.

A club statement read on Monday:

"Salford City Football Club has parted company with Richie Wellens by mutual consent.

"We would like to thank Richie for his time and efforts at the Club and wish him well for the future.

"An announcement about a new manager will be made in due course.  There will be no further comment."

Salford City

Salford won the EFL Trophy on penalties against Portsmouth at Wembley on March 13th, but have struggled with league form of late.

The side currently lie in 9th position, eight points off the playoff spots in League Two.

The club is part-owned by former Manchester United players Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.
