Australian rugby legend and current Tonga head coach Toutai Kefu is said to be "recovering well" in hospital, after being stabbed during a home-invasion on Monday morning.

The 47-year-old former Wallabies number 8 suffered life-threatening injuries when he was stabbed in his own home, having confronted burglars.

He was taken to a Brisbane hospital along with his wife and two of his children, who also suffered injuries during the invasion.

Initial reports said Kefu was "fighting for his life", before police confirmed his condition was no longer critical after surgery.

His daughter Olivia shared a message on social media, where she confirmed Toutai Kefu and his son Josh are both now recovering in hospital, adding that her mother and sister Madi would have surgery later in the week.

"Both Josh and Dad had their surgery's (sic) yesterday and are recovering well," she said.

"Thank you to everyone for all the kind messages and support, it means the absolute world to us all."

Two teenage boys have been arrested for the attack, with one one of those being charged with attempted murder.

A third suspect escaped in a stolen car, and police are yet to apprehend him.

Messages of support poured in for Kefu following the news of his injuries yesterday morning. The 47-year-old was a hugely popular figure in the game, having been part of Australia's 1999 Rugby World Cup success, as well as coaching his native Tonga at the 2019 World Cup, a role he was re-appointed to this year.
