'Tadhg and Johnny are fine' | Schmidt provides injury update

Joe Schmidt has provided an injury update after Ireland's 27-3 victory over Scotland in Yokohama on Saturday.

Both Bundee Aki and Peter O'Mahony had to be substituted with head injuries during the match while Johnny Sexton was substituted early and taken off kicking duties during the game.

On Sexton, Schmidt said the World Player of the Year was "fine" but that it was important to protect the Leinsterman throughout the tournament.

"Tadhg is fine. Johnny is fine. We decided to get him off, [and] Conor [Murray] off. We had the two HIAs, Bundee and Pete. They are both symptom-free at the moment, that's reassuring, but we have got to go through the process.

"For us, six days is the minimum to turn around after a concussion so we’ll just see how they are symptomatically but right here, right now, there is a bit of reassurance around those two.

"We will see how that pans out over the next 24 hours."

Schmidt also told RTÉ Sport after the match that the decision to take Sexton off kicking was just "being super-cautious".

"[They] got us through the first 15 minutes of the second half and then I felt that we were probably far enough in front close enough to that last quarter that we could bring them off and get them ready for a six-day turnaround, which is going to be tight with Japan having an eight-day turnaround," the New Zealander added.

"Potentially [there is a problem at centre], less so Pete because we’ve got Rhys [Ruddock] to come back into the mix."

Speaking about the match itself, Schmidt said he was "delighted" with his side's first-half performance and that the acquired bonus-point could yet be important towards the end of the group.
